Hey how’s it going fellow Guitar Slingers, Dave here and welcome to my channel.
I’m excited about this video because I’m going to be showing 10 Stevie ray Vaughan style licks with tabs, backing tracks the whole shebang.
So, if you’re a big Stevie ray fan like myself, hopefully you’ll leave this video with some killer sounding licks that utilise some of his most characteristic techniques that you can start working into your own playing.
Now, it’s worth mentioning that this video isn’t supposed to be a super in depth look into his playing style. I don’t think it’s really possible to sum up everything that makes Stevie so incredible into one video. It’s more of a kind of quick start lesson that combines lots of Stevie’s common licks and techniques.
I’m planning on doing a lot more videos where I'll break down what I believe to be his most recognisable techniques and concepts, and I’ll do a whole video on each for those of your hardcore Stevie fans that would like to delve deeper Into that kind of stuff.
But for now let’s just have some fun with some classic Stevie ray Vaughan licks.
So before we jump into the lesson let’s first talk about tone and equipment.
Stevie is obviously know for playing Strat’s so that’s what I’m going to be using today. He also liked to use cranked fender amps like a vibrolux and deluxe reverbs, dumbles and all that good stuff, I unfortunately don’t have access to any of those amps so im going to be using a Steve ray Vaughan voiced profile from Michael Britt in the Kemper profiler here. Sorry tone purists.
Also, another Important thing that I think get’s overlooked a lot when it comes to Stevie’s tone is that he tuned his guitars a half step down to Eb. I’ve done the same for this video and it’s amazing how by just tuning your guitar down a half step, you can get pretty close to his sound.
If you’re going to be keeping your guitar tuned down I’d recommend compensating for the lack of string tension by using a slightly higher gauge string compared to what you’d normally use for standard tuning. I usually keep my guitars in standard tuning using 10-52’s and that’s what these are and I find that the strings are a bit too loose and for lack of a better phrase it’s kinda feels like holding onto a live, wet fish or a bar of soap. And we don’t wanna drop that.
Okay so let’s start by talking about the common scales Stevie liked to use. He predominantly use a combination of the minor and major pentatonic scales and the blues scale. If you not familiar with either of these scales, then I have a free training series that I created which covers all these scales as well as the fundamental basics of music theory for guitar players, so if you’d like to check that out ill leave a link down below.
The chord progression we’re playing over is just a standard 12 bar blues shuffle In the key of Eb. I chose Eb so we could make use of those open strings that Stevie liked to use all the time.
Okay, so let’s jump right into it. I’ll put the tabs on the screen for each lick so you can follow along.
And if you’d like to access the entire lesson in written form, then you can do so through my website which I link down below. And through that link you’ll also be able to download the backing track so that you can practice these licks in context.
So let’s get started with lick #1.
Thanks for watching! Catch you In the next video! Take care.
