Therapy is filled with surprises. Sometimes a beautiful intervention falls flat. Other times, a cringe-worthy tone or reaction ends up landing exactly where it needs to land. It is an unknown that every therapist lives with.

On this particular day, I wanted to understand how long this couple had been stuck in a cycle of hearing each other without listening. But with the speed at which their cycle of blame, attack, counter-attack, and dismissive eye rolls unfolded, I began to experience dysregulation myself. And I snapped. I did exactly what they were doing to each other—I heard their words but I wasn’t listening.

In this workshop, we’ll unpack the difference between listening and hearing—a critical distinction in developing a foundation of effective communication in your relationships. And, yes, even therapists need this reminder too.
