(24 Aug 2012) Violence erupted in Alexandria as supporters of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi and his Islamist Muslim Brotherhood clashed with protesters rallying against them.
In Egypt's second largest city, a mob wielding knives, guns and sticks attacked around one thousand anti-Brotherhood protesters on Friday, leaving several people wounded.
Someone in the crowd lit a flare that sent clouds of smoke into the air and people fleeing in all directions, but it was unclear who was behind the attack.
Many gathered outside a military camp in Alexandria, beseeching the soldiers for help and protection from the attackers.
The protest in Alexandria was part of small nationwide demonstrations around Egypt on Friday, accusing Morsi of monopolising power.
They say the president exceeded his authority when he assumed legislative powers after forcing senior generals into retirement following a deadly attack this month by militants that killed 16 Egyptian soldiers in the Sinai Peninsula.
The protests point to the fears many Egyptians have about the Islamist president and his policies, and reflect the deep divide in Egyptian society over the country's future direction under Morsi.
The rallies against the new president and the Brotherhood could serve as a test of how Morsi will respond to the opposition's demands.
