A rare earthquake to hit the US East Coast added its own drama to the Strauss-Kahn announcement.

District Attorney General Cyrus Vance and others quickly evacuated the New York court room as it began to shake.



Measuring 5.8 it was one of the strongest quakes ever recorded in the region but there were no immediate reports of deaths although there were some injuries.



The epicentre was about 64 kilometres northwest of Richmond Virginia in the small town of Mineral.
