Ever since I started covering Douyin, the Chinese version of Tiktok, I’ve been deep-diving into the strangest topics almost every week. By next year I’ll be unironically using the SNOW app to edit my selfies, and my bedroom will have turned into an Asian supermarket where I sell clothes made out of microplastics. The main character of our story is Zheng Xiang Xiang, a saleswoman with over 5 million followers. She’s made millions of dollars in a week with her unique way of showcasing items online. She’ll show you an item for 3 seconds and within that time frame you have to decide whether or not you want it, otherwise, it’ll get sold and you’ll never see it again. We’re covering multiple topics like fomo marketing, live stream e-commerce, our permanently altered attention spans, and low quality items given greater value by brand association. Those orange boxes look awfully familiar to the ones Hermes uses. The Bizarre World of Chinese 3 Second Live Stream Selling #edvasian
