In the Shogun ending, Ochiba-no-kata's letter to Lord Toranaga was crucial. After the stunning Death of Mariko in Shōgun episode 9, John Blackthorne becomes one of the few members of Toranaga's crew to survive until the very end as his ultimate plan for Crimson Sky is eventually exposed in the last minutes of the episode. In addition, Ochiba-no-kata reveals her true self by betraying Lord Ishido in spite of her complex history with Toranaga.
In Shōgun episode 9, following the much-awaited reunion between Ochiba-no-kata and Mariko, Mariko begins composing a poem on a leafless branch that would eventually be her last. Talking about the poetry, Lady Ochiba talks to her son, the young Heir of the Taiko, whom she has devoted her life to defending. The last insightful words Mariko had spoken to her, "Flowers are only flowers because they fall," are how she ends the poetry that Mariko had begun.
