We will have a new episode of Capitalism Hits Home for you on April 7th. Until then, here is a clip in which Professor Ghodsee shares data showing higher sexual satisfaction and preference for marriage in socialist East Germany compared to West Germany.
"In the former Eastern Germany, when people were asked, 'do you want to get married?' 73% of men and 74% of women in the East, socialist part of Germany, said yes, they want to get married. That's 3/4 of the people that you're having relationships with are interested in marriage. Look at the difference between the West Germans where 71% of women want to get married but only 57% of men. And the reason that there's this really interesting discrepancy is, of course, because men in the West are supposed to be providers, and so they're constantly thinking of the economic considerations. Women, also thinking of economic considerations, want a husband who is going to be able to support her. Whereas in the East, partially because of state investments she's not looking for somebody to support her. She's looking for someone to be her partner, to be an equal, to be someone that she wants to spend time with, or share her time with, because she likes him, and not because he pays her rent. I think that's really important to understand."
