The "Carolina" or "The Carolina's Skirt" is sung in Galicia and Northern Portugal (and also throughout the northwest of the peninsula, coinciding with what would have been the territory of the ancient Kingdom of Galicia), so there is a dispute about its geographical origin. Nevertheless, "Carolina" was traditionally sung in festive environments and to promote dancing, as an element of great social cohesion, accompanying ferros, tambourines, aniseed bottles and bagpipes.

The song talks about a girl named Carolina who, when she dances, moves the painted lizard that she has in her skirt, what awakens passions. Like many traditional Galician-Portuguese songs, it has a double meaning, making it a picturesque song. Thus, this "crazy" girl who "does everything backwars" is associated with some metaphorically sexual elements, where the lizard's tail, for example, would refer to the man's excitement.

In Portugal this song is often found in pre-primary education, although the current version is a sanitised version of this older original. In fact, many of those elements have been censored or removed in both the present day version and the older version. Some popularised interpretations who try to revive the older versions are the Galician bands Fuxan os Ventos and luar na lubre, and Portuguese artists like Anafaia or Roberto Leal.

A "Carolina" ou a "Saia da Carolina" é cantada na Galiza e no Norte de Portugal (e também em todo o noroeste da península, coincidindo com o que teria sido o território do antigo Reino da Galiza), pelo que existe uma disputa sobre a sua origem geográfica. Não obstante, a Carolina era tradicionalmente cantada em ambientes festivos e para promover a dança, como elemento de grande coesão social, acompanhando ferros, pandeiros, garrafas de anis e gaitas de foles.

A canção fala de uma moça chamada Carolina que, quando baila, move o lagarto pintado que leva na saia, o que desperta paixões. Como muitas canções tradicionais galego-portuguesas, tem um duplo significado, tornando-a uma canção pitoresca. Esta rapariga "tola", que "tudo faz ao revés", está associada a alguns elementos metaforicamente sexuais, onde a cauda do lagarto, por exemplo, se referiria à excitação do homem.

Em Portugal esta música é frequentemente encontrada no ensino pré-primário, embora a versão atual seja uma versão sanitizada desta original mais antigo. Aliás, muitos desses elementos foram censurados ou removidos tanto na versão dos nossos dias como na versão mais antiga. Algumas interpretações popularizadas, são as das bandas galegas Fuxan os Ventos e luar na lubre, e de artistas portugueses como Anafaia ou Roberto Leal.
