The original Fort Washington was built in 1808 to protect the growing capital city of Washington, D.C. but was destroyed during the War of 1812. Rebuilt in 1814, the brick structure is the namesake for the neighborhood that grew up around it. Today the predominantly African American community of Fort Washington is home to an avid group of boaters who relish in the recreation opportunities of life on the water.
