The defendant, Hedda Nussbaum, was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter for failing to get medical care for her adopted daughter, Lisa Steinberg, who died of head trauma. The defense argued that only someone with medical knowledge could be held accountable for serious physical injury caused by withholding medical care, but the court disagreed. The court also found that the defendant's partner was not responsible for Lisa's death. The defendant left Lisa after assaulting her, and later returned to freebase cocaine. The defendant's final argument was that there was not enough evidence to support the testimony of an accomplice who claimed the defendant had assaulted Lisa.
