60 years ago today, America righted centuries of wrongs when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law on July 2, 1964. Passage of the Civil Rights Act was possible because of the persistent efforts of countless heroes.

The measure prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, sex, and national origin. It also forbids discrimination in voting, public accommodations, public facilities, public education, and federally funded programs.

We take a look at the fight it took to pass that historic legislation and how it has changed America in the decades since.
