STORYLINE
Myanmar's junta sent 10 truckloads of troops on Tuesday to a hotspot for anti-government protests, in a possible bid to thwart what Buddhist monks have promised will be continued demonstrations in the coming days.
Witnesses said the 300 troops in 10 trucks were seen heading toward the Sule Pagoda, where hours earlier tens of thousands of monks defied a government order to stay out of politics and held the eighth straight day of demonstrations.
The orange-robed monks, cheered on by supporters, marched out from Yangon's soaring Shwedagon Pagoda, while some 700 staged a similar show of defiance in the country's second largest city of Mandalay.
The protesters in Yangon - estimated at between 25,000 and 50,000 - marched more than two kilometres under a
scorching sun, from Shwedagon to the Sule Pagoda and then to the Botataung Pagoda on the Yangon River.
A monk who appeared to be one of their leaders addressed the crowd and vowed the protests would continue until the government apologised for mistreatment of monks at an earlier demonstration.
