Antibiotics usually acts on the harmful bacteria. If the child has received any accidental overdose, it usually does not cause any harmful or dangerous effects to the child, but we have to see if the child has any symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain as the antibiotic itself attacks the beneficial organisms in the intestine and results in vomiting, diarrhea in the child there are some groups of antibiotics when taken in the toxic dose, that is it has to be calculated according to the weight. If it is more than the toxic dose, it causes severe effects to the kidney and to the hearing. That is it causes nephrotoxoicity and ototoxicity can happen. So we have to monitor if the child has any excessive vomiting, diarrhea and if there is a decreased urine output. In any of these case, the child has to be given excessive amount of fluids and if the child has any loss of consciousness or if there is excess irritability, the child has to be taken to the hospital and assessed by a pediatrician.
