🤬👂Painful ear infection? It maybe Otitis Externa (OE) (aka Swimmer’s Ear (misnomer))

❓WHAT IS IT:
Infection of ear CANAL

🥺CAUSES:
water, humidity, trauma (q tips, scratching with foreign objects), ear plugs (in-ear headphones, hearing aids, ear plugs), skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis), immunocompromised conditions (cancer, diabetes, HIV), obstruction (ear wax, foreign body).

😵SYMPTOMS:
extreme pain, swelling of ear canal, drainage

TREATMENT:
✅ Debridement of ear canal by ENT with otologic microscope (this is THE MOST important part or it will NOT get better).
✅ Antibiotic or antifungal EAR DROPS.
❌ Oral Antibiotics are NOT helpful!

🩺PREVENTION:
- maintaining ear free of a lot of ear wax (obstructive) and foreign bodies (cotton, tissue paper, insects, etc)
- Do NOT scratch ear with foreign objects (pen caps, pins, bobby pins etc)
- 🙅‍♀️Swimmers ear drops in general are NOT helpful unless you are a surfer with bony growths in the ear
