Many people think that coaching is telling people what to do. Alan Fine even heard it defined once by a newly minted consultant as "telling people to go to hell in a way that they don't mind". Alan Fine thinks that telling people what to do, giving them advice, is a very important tool for a coach, but it's not the only tool. We get caught up in it because we're all educated on the model that performance is equal to our capacity plus whatever knowledge we can acquire. If that was true we could all read the book and be champions. There's obviously more to it. However, it is a useful tool for a coach, particularly if you have 4 conditions present:
1) The coach has the right knowledge.
2) The coach is good at communicating their knowledge.
3) The coach can capture the attention and interest of the performer.
4) The performer has enough experience and awareness to be able to do something with that knowledge.
If you get all 4 of those conditions present, then telling is a very powerful way to be helping people.
