Abstract
Color has become ubiquitous in computer graphics and imaging applications. Self-calibrating color displays are now available from a number of different ven- dors, and device-independent color representations are be- coming common. Still, users of- ten are frustrated by their inabili-ty to easily create a precise or harmonious color image. We have devised a new generation of color tools. We propose the notion of a palette to supplant the collection of unrelated colors created with previous tools. For functional colors, such as those used in maps or business graphics, we can create palettes availing ourselves of the color theory rules common in the graphical arts. For reference colors, which are colors asso- ciated with actual objects in the world (sky, earth, grass, ... ), we introduce a thematic database where each entry is a palette made of colors obtained by measuring and matching the ac- tual objects. Additional colors can be.mixed by blending colors in the palette and/or by import- ing them from other palettes.
