Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 - Aria, Variations 1-30 and Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 - Part 1&2.
Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March 1685 - 28 July 1750) was born in Germany to a musical family. Bach was a composer and musician, and was very well-known for his orchestral music. He is considered the quintessential composer of the Baroque era, and one of the most important figures in classical music. Bach composed over 1,000 pieces of music.
The idea for Bach's Goldberg Variations came from George Frideric Handel, who published an aria with 64 Variations based on the same aria bass, but was only eight measures long in 1733. Bach thought it was a wonderful idea to have many variations on a promising ground bass. Bach thought the bass was too short and extended Handel's 8 measures to 32 measures.
Goldberg Variations is one of Bach's most serious and ambitious work for the keyboard, which displays his exceptional knowledge of the many different styles of music of his day, and his own exquisite performing techniques. The music is constructed symmetrically, beginning with a beautifully tranquil and highly ornamented Aria, the bass line of which fuels the 30 variations that follow. After Variation 15, there is somewhat of a dividing line, and the piece ends as it begins, with the return of the Aria. There is the additional complication that the pitch difference between the melodies rises from a canon in unison up to the canon in ninths.
Goldberg Variations was named after its first performer Johann Gottlieb Goldberg and published in 1741. Bach's set of 30 Variations, is a deeper, more serious and more sophisticated showpiece than Handel's. It may have been Bach's way of saying "I can do much better than you."
