On May 6, 23 new recruits of the Pontifical Swiss Guard swore allegiance to the Pope, in a ceremony held to commemorate the anniversary of the Sack of Rome. Pope Francis met with their families beforehand and encouraged the new guards to remember that their decision to serve is related to their personal journey of faith. The Swiss Guards defended Pope Clement VII against the Holy Roman Emperor's army during the battle in 1527.
