A seaweed blob twice the width of the US is making its way toward Punta Cana. Three million tons of seaweed are expected to enter the Dominican Republic this year, with Punta Cana taking a big chunk of it. The type of seaweed in this floating blob is called Sargassum and has been causing havoc since 2011 on a yearly basis during what has come to be known as seaweed season. This problem affects all Caribbean nations, including the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and the United States.
Punta Cana beaches become inundated with Sargassum during seaweed season, and resorts in the area have had to adapt to keep the beaches clean.
