The Battle of Midway_A Decisive Naval Battle in The Pacific Theater of World War II will be explained in about 5 minutes:
The Battle of Midway was a decisive naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II from June 4-June 7 between the United States and Japan. The United States won the battle over the Japanese, advancing the United States to win the whole war in the Pacific theatre.
Midway contained the major air and submarine base of the U.S. Navy. Japan recognized that control of the atoll would be critical for its plans in the central Pacific.
The Battle of Midway has often been called the turning point of the Pacific. It was the Allies first major naval victory against the Japanese despite the Japanese Navy having more forces and experience than its American counterpart.
Had Japanese won the battle of Midway, they would have turned the tide of wwII in the Pacific. They would have expanded their power and would have remained on the defensive for the remainder of WWII. But that didn’t happen. U.S. forces’ morale was strengthened and the tide of the war was in favor of the Allies after the battle.
The victory of the U.S. Navy in the battle of Midway is the victory of intelligence. That the American cryptanalysts could break the Japanese JN25 naval code enabled the U.S. Navy to confirm that Midway was to be the target of the Japanese attack.
Japanese lost approximately 3,057 men, 4 carriers, 1 cruiser and hundreds of aircraft while the United States lost approximately 307 men, 1 carrier, 1 destroyer and 144 aircraft.
The Battle of Midway redefined the central importance of air superiority for the remainder of the war when the Japanese suddenly lost their four main aircraft carriers and were forced to return home. Without any form of air superiority, the Japanese never again launched a major offensive in the Pacific.
