This video demonstrates how to make the basic afghan stitch also known as the Tunisian Simple stitch, Tunisian basic stitch or Tunisian knit stitch, and others.
This stitch creates a thermal fabric that has even squares that is ideal for cross stitching. Use a larger hook than recommended on the yarn label for less curling and a softer drape.
Here is the project pages for two afghans I made using this stitch. The first one has squares that are later cross-stitched and sewn together. The second I used a cabled afghan hook and used the intarsia technique to add the alphabet letters.
