Did you know that you can talk to an astronaut on the International Space Station via Amateur (Ham) Radio? You can! All you need is to be at the right place at the right time with the right amateur radio gear, and a little bit of luck.
The ISS had a morning pass over Central Florida today and Dad (James, WX4TV) was on the way to an amateur radio Volunteer Examination session with Jim Santore (ND1C). The pass occurred as we were next to an open farm field and we pulled over to see if we could talk to the International Space Station.
As the ISS came over the horizon, we heard an astronaut talking to other amateur radio stations across the US. ND1C/mobile gave his callsign a couple of times from the mobile VHF/UHF radio in the truck and the ISS called him back! As you can see from the look on his face, we were quite shocked that she heard us from the mobile rig.
Tomorrow morning, we will be taking the satellite gear out for a couple of passes to see if the WK1DS crew can talk to an astronaut in space!
