I absolutely adore classic/retro FPS games—Doom, Dusk, Blood, Powerslave, Ion Fury, Duke Nukem, etc. But my very favorite is 1996’s Quake. Its dark aesthetics. Fast and fluid movement. Top-notch level, weapon, and monster designs. This retrospective is devoted to all of that stuff and more: Quake’s troubled development, relationship to Doom, and influence on deathmatch and speedrunning trends.
