Beit Shean National Park
Ancient Beit Shean was occupied for thousands of years by ancient civilizations since the time of the Old Testament, it is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible several times and is where king Saul and his sons bodies were hung on the walls after losing a battle with the ancient Philistines. It was a major city during king David's and king Solomon's time. Later on, the Greeks and then the Romans, Crusaders, Mamluks , Ottomans, British and finally Israel took control of the area. In 749 AD the city was completely destroyed by earthquake. Beit Shean in Hebrew means 'house of rest' and it was one of the ten cities belonging to the Decapolis (Greek\Roman speaking cities in the eastern Mediterranean). There are many fresh water springs in the area.
