Mayor John Tory, joined by Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa and Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg, gave an update on the city’s COVID-19 cases and the ongoing response to the pandemic on Friday.
During the update, Tory announced additional cancellations of large city events, like festivals and parades, with more than 250 people until at least July 31, and those with attendance of more than 25,000 people until at least Aug. 31.
Some large-scale events, such as the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), were cancelled ahead of the announcement.
Also, the mayor said that summer recreational programs and camps for children will be cancelled in order to protect people from COVID-19. This decision was based on advice from Toronto Public Health professionals, said the mayor. City officials are looking into the possibility of providing a modified version of summer day camps, contingent on provincial restrictions being lifted and health conditions in the city being met.
