Q: How quiet should it be?
A: This one is rated for 52dBA on the lowest setting, sort of as loud as a conversation in a quiet place. The "A" refers to the weighting curve they use, which matches closer to the human sensitivity to midrange frequencies. It's not as quiet as the pyramid-shaped range scoops (more like ~42dBA), but those were out of stock everywhere due to COVID when we looked. The quietest ones are the "Remote Blower" units, where the motor is actually mounted in the attic. For our house, it would have been very difficult to get to the attic, so we went with the in-unit motor.

Q: What size range hood should I get?
A: They recommend getting 6" wider than your range. We had limited space in our kitchen and never end up cooking on all the burners at the same time anyway, so we went with the 30" on a 30" range. Not necessarily recommended, but it will do the job.

Q: Should I get a ducted hood, ductless, or convertible?
A: I prefer ducted, which blows the air outside of your house. The ductless ones just recirculate the air inside your house, which might be nice in the winter so you have extra heat, but if you burn something, there's no way to get the smell out of the kitchen! And in the Summer, a recirculating (ductless) vent will just blow that warm air back into your kitchen. Convertible means it can be installed either ducted or ductless. Also, keep in mind, a lot of counties require a permit to install ductwork.



Q: What's the difference between wall-mount and island hood?
A: A wall-mount hood is designed to be mounted against a flat wall behind your range, so the duct hugs the wall and the hood extends out from the wall. The Island hood has the duct in the center of the hood and comes straight down from the ceiling without touching any walls. The island-mount is used for, you guessed it, kitchen islands, which have no walls nearby.



Q: What about those neat downdraft vents that retract into the counter?
A: Ugh, please don't do those! First of all, they have to fight against physics to pull the hot vapors/fumes down, because heat rises. So they have to be more powerful (possibly more noisy), draw more of your air-conditioned air out of your house, and are less effective. Also, the motorized actuator that makes the vent move up and down will fail some day, leaving you with a hefty repair bill.
