With Francine now gone, there's a new system to monitor. As of Sunday afternoon, Potential Tropical Cyclone #8, has formed in the Atlantic. WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said, "If it gets named, it would be Helene, and would be limited to being a tropical storm since it likely won't have time over the water to strengthen into a hurricane."
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on X that the system could cause flash flooding and minor river flooding across southeast North Carolina. Coastal flooding and high surf will also be possible along the N.C. coast, the NHC said. We're also tracking Tropical Storm Gordon in the Atlantic.
Previously named Tropical Depression Seven, the storm became Gordon on Friday morning. WRAL meteorologist Anthony Baglione says a track out to sea is likely for Gordon. Gordon is the season’s seventh named storm. Peak hurricane season runs from August through October
Peak hurricane season runs from late August through mid-October. This is when we see 51% of tropical storms, 62% of hurricanes and 70% of major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). As we head into September, these are the areas that have been most favored for tropical storm development over the past few decades.
