Most people who have optic neuritis have a an excellent prognosis.
Their vision usually returns close to baseline within six months to one year, even without treatment. With treatment, recovery tends to be faster.
However, if there’s an underlying condition, such as neuromyelitis optica, spectrum disorder (NMOSD) or Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Associated Disease (MOGAD), the episodes can be more difficult to treat, and also can recur.
These patients need to be a long-term therapy to prevent recurrences.
