Rat trap. There are very many different types of rat traps, but few of them work well.
This little trap is about 15 cm in height and 10 cm wide. The hoops are about 1,5 cm apart. When bent over, the upper end of the spring stick comes immediately over the trap. To this upper end of the stick are attached the snare loop and also a short stick, about 10 cm in length. The trigger-stick is just long enough to find bearing on both sides of the hoops. When setting the trap, bend the spring stick down and arrange the attached loop between the two hoops so that its lower part just about reaches the ground line. With one hand retain a grip on the spring stick and with the other you arrange the holding stick so that the front hoop is enclosed in the V between its upper end and the attached cord. To retain it in that position, place the trigger stick against the front hoop so that the lower end of the holding stick just catches it. The holding stick is set somewhat to one side, not in the middle of the trap entrance. The trap is now set, and you can relase your hold on the spring stick.
How it works:
When a rat endeavours to pass through the hoops, either to get at the bait or to pass along the rat-run, it has to pass over the trigger stick. As its weight comes upon the stick it slips down and so frees the holding stick which is plucked up by the strain on the spring stick. The loop-snare is also jerked upward and this catches the rat's body and jams it against the upper part of the hoops where it is held by the pull of the spring stick.
How To Increase Success?
If you set the trap in the middle of nowhere, you probably won't trap the rat. Set the trap on the path that the rats use over and over again! Set traps right on these pathways, and you do not need any bait at all.
Keep in mind: Rats are Neophobic which means they are naturally wary of new objects. The traps will be new objects to the rats and so their instinct will be to ignore them for a time. This is normal and you must not be despondent if you do not catch your rat immediately.
Tip: place the traps set in the open position at first and then ignore them for a few days or a week. This will allow the rats to get used to these "new objects" and even go in and out of them safely. Then set them to catch and do not move them if you are unsuccessful. An old object becomes a new one if you move it.
