Washington said it may authorise the use of its weapons to strike targets deep inside Russia in a move that is likely to make Moscow furious. The US said the policy applies to Ukraine’s border region of Kharkiv Oblast but “could expand into other areas”. The US defended "our policy hasn't changed… we do allow those cross-border strikes when Russia is attacking from the other side of the border.” The Kremlin slammed NATO countries allowing Kyiv to use arms they had supplied to strike Russian territory, calling the move a “dangerous escalation.” Amid mounting tensions over the war in Ukraine, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov spoke for a second time in just over two weeks on July 12.
