Vicuña wool is the most expensive commercially available yarn for knitting in the world. One one-once skein often sells for up to 300 USD. In this video, I will show you what vicuna yarn is, how soft it is, and what knitting with it feels like.
It is my honest opinion that it is indeed the softest yarn in the world, much softer than cashmere or quivit and quite a pleasure to knit with it. No wonder, the threads are between 12 and 14 microns. Studies show it has the highest comfort factor of all available natural fibers. It is, however, also very difficult to knit with because the available yarn is all a thin lace-weight that is very splitty.
The vicuna is a rare animal of the camel family that lives high up in the andes at altitudes of 3200 to 3800 meters. It's rather small (shoulder height of 85 cm) and only produces 500 grams of vicuna wool per year which is obtained by shearing after hearding the wild animals together (a process called chaku in Peru).
