NAC is an amino acid that is derived from the naturally occurring amino acid cysteine. It has been used for decades to help treat a variety of conditions and has recently gained popularity as a dietary supplement.
It’s so powerful that the FDA even tried to make it inaccessible to regular people recently. It’s been available as a supplement for about 30 years, but back in the 60s it was approved as an inhaled drug for obstructive lung disease and then also in 1985 as an oral drug to treat acetaminophen toxicity. Because of this previous drug classification, they wanted to exclude it from the dietary supplement category.
