STORYLINE:
Police fired tear gas in an attempt to block demonstrators in Congo's eastern city of Goma who were attempting to march on the Rwandan border on Monday.
Journalists at the scene said as many as a thousand protestors took to the streets.
Congo believes that Rwanda is supporting the M23 rebels, who have expanded their control in the east of the country over the past year.
On Saturday, residents said the rebels gained control of two more towns.
In response Congo’s government ordered the Rwandan ambassador, Vincent Karega, to leave the country within 48 hours.
Rwanda on Sunday accused Congo of escalating tensions between the two countries and said its forces along the border “remain on alert.”
Congo has repeatedly accused Rwanda of backing the rebels, an allegation Rwanda has repeatedly denied.
Some protesters called for Russian support to counter the threat posed by the M23 rebel movement that has made territorial gains close to Goma in recent days.
The M23 rose to prominence more than a decade ago when its fighters seized Goma, the largest city in Congo’s east, which sits along the border with Rwanda.
After a peace deal, many of M23′s fighters were integrated into the national military.
Then the group re-emerged last November, saying the government had failed to live up to its decade-long promises.
By June, they had seized the strategic town of Bunagana near the border with Uganda.
