Beriathan and Meneldir return to Caranost and recover one of Narndir’s journals from a hidden cache. With it, they intend to learn more about the Grey Fear and how to stop it. They read about the breaking of Arnor into the Kingdoms of Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur and how these 3 kingdoms warred with each other; of Lord Amondir, ruler of Tyrn Gorthad, who assumed the leadership of Cardolan after King Artandil was slain; of the coming of the Witch-king, who raised the Dead of Tyrn Gorthad; of Lord Amondir’s failed attempt to appease the Dead and his disappearance among the barrows. Their investigation, however, is cut short, as there are several pages missing from Narndir’s journal.
