Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday apologised for the recent collapse of Shivaji Maharaj's statue in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra.
Addressing a public meeting after inaugurating Vadhvan Port in Palghar, Modi said that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was not just a name or a ruler for him but a deity.
"What happened in Sindhudurg recently...Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name for me and companions, he wasn't just a king. For us Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is 'Aaradhya Dev' (deity). I want to bow down to the feet of my deity and apologise," he said.
The 35-foot statue of the 17th-century Maratha empire founder installed at Rajkot Fort premises collapsed on August 26, nearly nine months after it was unveiled by the Prime Minister.
