Climate projections are one of the few sources of climate information that do not have an operational status at the WMO level. This might look surprising given the key role that both global and regional climate projections play in many domains, from climate risk assessments to climate adaptation plans and mitigation policies. This presentation will discuss the requirements for the operationalisation of the climate projections and the initial steps in this direction, including the role of the fast developments based on machine learning techniques. It will focus on how this effort can benefit the co-production of robust regional climate information, which is the weakest link for their current use in climate adaptation. The presentation will also discuss what it would take to complete this operationalisation challenge and how it could enter the WMO sphere.
