The Tale of The Princess Kaguya Full Review Transcript:
The Tale of The Princess Kaguya is an animated feature from Studio Ghibli in Japan, nominated for an Oscar and there's a simple reason why: it is absolutely ravishingly beautiful, and quite unlike anything else you'll have seen before. It's quite a simple story really a Japanese fairy tale about a bamboo cutter, who when he's in the forest discovers a tiny child who grows at an astonishing rate into an adult and he soon realises that there is something special about her, and he decides that he should take her from the countryside into the city and try and marry her off to a prince because he feels like she must be noble. It looks as I say unlike anything else it's directed by a guy called Isao Takahata - he doesn't make many films he made Grave of the Fireflies which you may have heard of. But his movies don't look like cartoons, they're like they're drawn with charcoal on a water-colour base, they're like paintings that have just come to life. I would warn you though if you're thinking of taking children to see this film that firstly it's quite long and secondly you might want to see the dubbed version that has American actors and actresses like James Caan and Chloe Grace Moretz. If you're just going as a grown-up though, don't worry about those things just breathe it all in, it looks quite incredible.
