In F major, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed Sancta Maria, mater Dei (Holy Mary, mother of God), a Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary for SATB choir, first and second violins, violas, and basso continuo of violoncello, double bass, and organ. In Salzburg, Mozart added the piece to his catalogue on September 9, 1777.
The 21-year-old Mozart pleaded with Archbishop Colloredo to permit him and his father, Leopold, to find work elsewhere in the summer of 1777 because he was yearning to leave Salzburg. The archbishop's answer was to fire them both, but he later expressed regret and permitted Leopold to take over as deputy Kapellmeister. Before leaving on September 23, 1777, with his mother on their voyage to Augsburg, Mannheim, and Paris, where she passed away, Mozart penned this act of dedication for the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (8 September).
"Sancta Maria mottetto de B.V.M."[2] or "Graduale ad festum b. M. v.: "Sancta Maria, mater Dei"" are the complete titles of the manuscripts and published scores, respectively.[3] (that is, the Gradual for the Festival of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the Motet of/for the Blessed Virgin Mary.) "Sancta Maria, mater Dei: motette zu Marienfesten for Chor, 2 Violins, Viola, Kontrabass and Orgel" was the name of the first (known?, published edition, by Anton Böhm in 1804). Additionally, "offertorium" is written on the autograph and parts-copies, though not in Mozart's hand or any other recognised hand, according to Neue Mozart-Archiv.
