The controversial Manila Bay dolomite beach was officially reopened to the public on Sunday evening coinciding with the Philippines 124th Independence Day. Following the 2 years of rehabilitation to improve the water quality in the area, which started in 2019. While the beach nourishment project remains intact, which started in 2020, has withstood rains, typhoons, and floods.
The rehabilitation project is one of the Legacies of President Duterte’s Administration. The whole project, which consists of the beach nourishment, coastal restoration, and enhancement of the Manila Bay walk, covers the whole area starting from the southernmost tip of the US Embassy up to the Breakwater of the Manila Yacht Club. The whole Rehabilitation process was a big success as part of the Manila Bay Comprehensive Clean-up drive, with the support of the public has been overwhelming.
Also unveiled on Sunday was the World War II Heritage Cannon in the Remedios area fronting the Rajah Sulayman Park, in an effort to encourage patriotism among the public and to signify the battle to clean up Manila Bay is now yet over. The Heritage Cannon is one of the original World War II cannons from Fort Drum Island situated at the mouth of Manila Bay.
At present, the public is not allowed to bring food, swim, smoke, and collect dolomite sand in the area. Pets are also banned from entry.
Waters along the Manila Bay recorded a coliform level of 5 point 75 million most probable number or MPN per 100 milliliters. Levels at one station at the beach have already gone down to 920 MPN per 100mL last month, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Moving forward, the dolomite beach will be open to the public every day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources capping the crowd at 3,500 at a given time. The 389-million pesos beautification project of the DENR was first opened to the public in September 2020.
