Modern software stands beside cinema as one of the most complex, multi-sensory forms of human communication ever created. Unlike film however, neither consumers, critics, nor creators have a standard vocabulary for deconstructing the user interface into its constituent components. As a result, we struggle to accurately articulate what specific aspects of any given UI is particularly innovative, profoundly flawed, or perfectly implemented. In this talk, I'll propose a universal framework that identifies each of individual aspects of a user interface, drawing on numerous real-world examples to illustrate what various products get right and what other products get wrong.
