We love 4wding on sand and headed north to Nine Mile Beach to test the Challenger on a beach which is claimed to have the 'softest sand on the NSW North Coast.' In my opinion 'Cellitos/ Sandbar is worse, but that was during a 4 year drought, so I may be comparing apples with oranges. It had rained the previous day which would also affect the comparison.Nine Mile Beach is the stretch of sand that includes Blacksmiths Beach and Redhead Beach. It's a 4WDing and Fishing hotspot. Beach Permit Required. We got ours at the Redhead Servo and accessed the beach from the Redhead end.We were on the edge of getting bogged all day, but reversing back and trying again got us through. We tested setting Traction Control on and off and soon realized that setting it to 'off' in sand and mud is is also important.Tyres were dropped to 18 PSI all-round but 15 PSI was recommended. We had a great time on the beach and it was also a 'recon' for camping there with the camper trailer which we will do in the future.I bought a set of Maxtrax plus mounting pins and had them on the roof just in case but they were more for peace of mind because the Challenger did well. There were small dunes to drive on and we tried them out but the main areas of dunes are being rehabilitated and are fenced off.We detoured via historic Catherine Hill Bay, which is a fascinating little town on the way to Belmont.
