A 5-year-old Kansas girl was sexually assaulted and killed after neighbors say her mother kicked her out of their home.
Mickel W. Cherry, 25, was arrested on charges of murder and rape of a victim less than 14 on Tuesday in connection to the death of 5-year-old Zoey Felix, local news outlet WIBW reported. A day earlier, Topeka police found the child at a gas station with life-threatening injuries. She was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.
Holly Jo Felix — mother of Zoey Felix, 5, who was killed Monday — is on probation for aggravated battery, a felony, committed last year, records show.
Shawnee County District Court records suggest the victim in that case was Zoey.
They identify the victim only as "Z.F." and give her birthdate as XX/XX/2018.
Zoey was born March 7, 2018.
Holly Felix about two weeks ago expelled a group that included Zoey; Ezequiel Felix-Guerrero, who was Zoey's father; a teenage girl who was Zoey's sister; and Mickel Cherry out of the house where they lived with her at 2216 S.E. Market, neighbors said. The group went to live in a campsite in southeast Topeka.
