BODY AND STATE
Session IV: Buying and Selling the Body, Pt 1
In this, the 23rd Social Research conference, speakers discussed the body as a human rights arena in which many forces—religion, science, media, and the market—struggle for control over policies that control our bodies. We aimed to illuminate how the often tacit assumptions about the "normal," "healthy," and "acceptable" body lead to policies which are, at their core, unjust.
The topic, "Body Parts," was discussed by two panelists:
Michele Goodwin, Everett Fraser Professor in Law at the University of Minnesota, lectured on "Intimate Markets in Biological Spaces."
Nancy Scheper-Hughes, Chancellor's Professor in Medical Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley and Director of Organs Watch, spoke on "The Body of the Enemy: Organ Theft During Wartime, Conflict and Political Chaos."
And, biological markers (genes and DNA) were addressed by two speakers:
Renata Salecl, Centennial Professor of Law at the London School of Economics; Senior Research for the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, gave a talk on "Perversion and Forensic Science: Fraudulent DNA Testimonies and the Danger of Bio Banks."
