Darkness is one of my top two reasons why Alaska’s not perfect.
In answer, yes, Virginia, just like everywhere else in the world. But Alaska and Juneau have other factors making it worse.
First, it depends on latitude. Juneau is at latitude 58 and our shortest day is six hours long. Fairbanks is at latitude 64 and their shortest day is four hours long.
Cloud cover makes a huge difference, the farther south, the more likely the clouds. Juneau is mostly cloudy all year, Fairbanks has more sun. Anchorage is in the middle.
Last is topography. Juneau is nestled between ocean and mountain, many parts don’t see direct sun for two or three months straight. Fairbanks is flat, Anchorage somewhere in the middle.
