You have probably never heard of the Paratethys, but just a few million years ago, this giant was the largest lake in the world. Covering 2.800.000 square kilometers or over 1.000.000 square miles, it was the size of some of the largest countries which we have to today and during its 7 million year lifespan it boasted large variety of marine species which unfortunately went extinct together with the lake. The story of the #Paratethys is a story of the force of #Geography and a gentle reminder that nothing on this planet is forever, not even the largest things that have ever existed.
