When Acer reached out to me to review the ConceptD 3 Pro I wasn’t sure what to expect. The specs look good and it seemed like a well-built machine, but would it stand up to the coveted position of the Macbook Pro or Dell XPS 15. Two laptops that I consider to be the leaders for creative professionals such as Graphic Designers, Video Editors, and Photographers to name a few.
At first glance, I was impressed by the build quality of the laptop. It felt well assembled, they used quality materials, and it was fairly lightweight (although the Macbook Pro and Dell XPS 15 are roughly 1 pound lighter). It is constructed of anodized aluminum on the top cover and keyboard deck with a plastic bottom cover.
For the screen showdown, I will say that the Macbook Pro and the Dell XPS have a little more to curb appeal. They are both bright-glossy screens making them slightly more attractive at first glance. But the ConceptD 3 Pro is a worthy competitor in this category as well. It is a Full HD display and it tests out at 100% sRGB and Adobe RGB for maximum color accuracy.
The battery life is great, not incredible, but great. Working on graphic design tasks you are going to get roughly 5 - 6 hours of battery life and video editing around 4 - 5. I primarily use the Adobe suite, as I am sure you do as well. Those programs take a lot of power to run… it is the nature of the beast.
It was refreshing to see all of the necessary ports that I use on the day-to-day on the side of this laptop. Something that you have heard me mercilessly scrutinize the Macbook Pro for lacking.
HDMI
USB-C
USB 3.1 x2
USB 2.0
Audio Jack
Network Port
The ConceptD 3’s user experience is fundamentally excellent. I am impressed with the trackpad. Something I am pleasantly surprised to say having loathed the Dell XPS trackpad to this very day. I am not sure if I can say with definitive confidence that it is better than the Macbook Pro’s trackpad, as those are big shoes to fill, but it excellent gestures, sensitivity, and location intelligence (it knows where you finger is on the trackpad to determine whether you would like to right or left click).
In my book, this is a very substantial WIN for the ConceptD 3 Pro. Now I am sure you are starting to see why I am considering this laptop to be a worthy competitor of the Macbook Pro and Dell XPS 15.
Moving on to the keyboard. I am not used to expanding keyboards (including the num pad), but from the time I started using the laptop to the end of my testing, I was starting to get used to it. I like the keystroke. It is soft, sharp, and has great travel. I like to know when I pressed a key, something that has perturbed me about the Macbook Pro (I never quite know if I am applying the right amount of pressure when typing).
Now that we have discussed the build and user experience lets see how the ConceptD 3 Pro stacks up against the Dell XPS 15 and the Macbook Pro punch for punch…
