(29 Sep 2013) Polls in the Austrian elections opened on Sunday morning, with two upstart parties vying for enough votes to topple the left-centre government coalition which has run Austria for most of the post-World War II period.
Most polls opened across the country at 0800 (local time - 0600 GMT) and will close at 1700 (local time - 1500 GMT).
The Socialists won more than 29 per cent of the vote in the last election five years ago and their coalition partner, the People's Party, nearly 26 per cent.
Their majority is threatened by two liberal parties, the BZO and Neos, if they clear the five per cent hurdle needed to get into parliament.
The Greens, the right-wing Freedom Party and a populist party led by Austro-Canadian billionaire Frank Stronach all are expected to clear five per cent.
