Influenza is a recurring public health problem due to the virus's rapid evolution. In this program, we discuss how we've seen mutations interact with each other during influenza evolution. We have found that during the evolution of the influenza nucleoprotein, there is extensive epistasis, where some mutations enable the occurrence of others. This epistasis is mediated through protein stability, suggesting that it may be possible to understand many of the constraints on influenza evolution.
