Dr. Eileen De Villa, Toronto's medical officer of health, said during Friday's coronavirus briefing that there are now 13 deaths and 986 cases of COVID-19 in the city, which includes 812 confirmed cases and 174 probable cases.
Dr. De Villa said that using the estimates released by the Ontario government, Toronto could see 600-3,000 deaths by the end of the pandemic.
Mayor of Toronto John Tory said that he supports the decision of Ontario’s premier Doug Ford to release the COVID-19 projection models so everybody has the information they need to make decisions to protect their families and loved ones.
Mayor Tory announced that the court has approved the city’s request to impose a $1,000 set fine for whoever is caught standing within less than two metres of someone they don’t live with in parks or public spaces.
Tory also said that the city is experiencing an estimated financial pressure of $65 million each and every week the coronavirus crisis goes on.
Chief Matthew Pegg, Fire Chief & General Manager of Emergency Management for the City of Toronto, said that they’ve received nearly 1,000 complaints regarding parks and amenities use or concerns from the public about inappropriate physical distancing.
