In this video I'll be preparing benzonitrile from:
• 87g Benzamide
• 100g Ammonium sulphamate
The reaction takes place in two stages. In the first stage between 150-160°C, ammonium sulphamate reacts with benzamide to for a N-benzoylsulphamate intermediate. This temperature was maintained for 3.5 hours before slowly increasing the temperature to 200°C over the course of 1.5 hours.
The second part of the reaction occurs at temperatures above 190°C where the intermediate product decomposes into benzonitrile and ammonium bisulphate.
